To apply for federal financial aid go to http://fafsa.ed.gov
Here is a good book describing all the different kinds of grants and student loans you can get by applying:
http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/attachments/siteresources/FundingEduBeyondHighSchool_0910.pdf
You might want to check to see if your school has the privilege of accepting these federal loan on your behalf by looking up the school on this website. If they are not listed, you need to RUN, not walk to the nearest real school. There are a number of reasons why a school can't get federal funding and none of them are in your favor... accredited or not.

Can you use the military school grants for your spouse?
Mommyof3 B
My husband has enough training that he doesnt need to go to school, but I would LOVE to get back to school. Can I use his military grants or is it only for the person who served?
Answer
HIS Tuition Assistance and HIS GI Bill are for HIM, not you. There are many scholarships that are available for active duty spouses. Also, due to our hubbies pay, many are eligible for Pell Grants and other financial assistance.
Edit: The Army does have a program, but there are several restrictions regarding the ability to transfer the funding to a spouse. They are the ONLY service with this option.
Edit: Maggie, most young spouses, married to E4 and below, still qualify for Pell with all of that added in.

How can I find out which of my relatives were granted US military medals?
jussamagin
I have found a WWI (US) Victory Medal and cannot figure out whose it was. Would like to find a list online that I can search by surname. Thanks.
Answer
There is no open database that will allow you to research by name who received the WWI Victory Medal. The medal was awarded to everyone in the US Military during WWI (same for WWII for the WWII Victory Medal). If you have a great grandparent (or grand parent) who served in the US Military during WWI, then you can bet that person was awarded the medal. To find out if he/they were awarded other medals, you will need to submit a form available on www.archives.gov that requests the info for "your" parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. The form provides the requirements to validate your family lineage for this purpose.
If you have any documents, eg. discharge certificate or a picture that shows a military unit that your relative was assigned, that will help the archives to research the info. Be sure to list the military service. You should be able to get additional info from your parents or any living aunts and uncles. Fill in as much info as you can e.g. date of birth, place of birth, etc. You can request his/her person military record file. It takes about 6 months for the archives to respond.
Good luck.
PS: If there is a match, ask for an issue of all military awards that he/she rates. The govt will do this one time without cost to the next of kin. Did this for my WWII serving father.
